Braga is one of the oldest cities in Portugal . It was already in Roman times and its history continues for over 2000 years. It was an important spiritual center from the very beginning. One of the landmarks of Braga is the famous Sanctuary of Good Jesus from the Mountain (Sanctuaire de Bom Jesus do Monte), which is located a bit from the center, on a small hill.

One of the biggest attractions is the richly decorated stairs that lead straight to the church. Following them, you pass many sculptures, chapels and fountains. However, from the very top of the stairs there is an amazing view of the city and its surroundings. You can also get to the top by the original funicular , which dates back to 1883. There are also many interesting buildings in the very center of the city. These include the 15th-century Arco da Porta Nova gate , the 14th-century royal chapel, or the monumental Se Cathedral , which was built in the 11th century. It is also worth taking a stroll along Rua do Souto, which has a truly medieval atmosphere. Also visit Braga's main square, Praca da Republica, dominated by a 17th-century building called Arcadas. The old town, although small, gives the feeling of a journey through time.
