Braga is one of the oldest cities in Portugal . It was already in Roman times and its history continues for over 2000 years. It was an important spiritual center from the very beginning. One of the landmarks of Braga is the famous Sanctuary of Good Jesus from the Mountain (Sanctuaire de Bom Jesus do Monte), which is located a bit from the center, on a small hill.

One of the biggest attractions is the richly decorated stairs that lead straight to the church. Following them, you pass many sculptures, chapels and fountains. However, from the very top of the stairs there is an amazing view of the city and its surroundings. You can also get to the top by the original funicular , which dates back to 1883. There are also many interesting buildings in the very center of the city. These include the 15th-century Arco da Porta Nova gate , the 14th-century royal chapel, or the monumental Se Cathedral , which was built in the 11th century. It is also worth taking a stroll along Rua do Souto, which has a truly medieval atmosphere. Also visit Braga's main square, Praca da Republica, dominated by a 17th-century building called Arcadas. The old town, although small, gives the feeling of a journey through time.

For whom?

If you are interested in the history of Portugal , then Braga, which is one of the oldest cities in the country, will surely be an extremely interesting destination for you. Also check it out when you are fascinated by classical architecture. In the area, it is worth visiting Guimares , Peneda Geres , and the Douro Valley of Lame and Pinhao .

Melia Braga Hotel & Spa

Melia Braga Hotel & Spa is a high-class resort at a surprisingly low price. Outdoor and indoor swimming pools and a spa area are available. My room was small but very comfortable. The hotel is away from the old town, but it is quite close to the famous sanctuary. At least there are no parking problems.

Hotel Dona Sofia

The hotel is located in the heart of Braga. The biggest advantage was that in the evening we could go for a short walk in the old town. Considering the location and conditions, the accommodation was at a reasonable price. We regretted that we only stayed one night. The only minus is parking. The hotel offers discounts on parking in nearby parking lots, but there wasn't much space. Finally, with the help of friendly staff, we managed to leave the car safely.

Sé Guesthouse

Perfectly located guesthouse – in the heart of Braga. It is located in a very nicely renovated tenement house and offers good conditions at a reasonable price. The only downside is the bathroom in the corridor. Apart from that, great atmosphere and the price includes a very good breakfast. It is also worth mentioning the lovely hosts who will be happy to help and advise where to go.

Vila Gale Collection Braga

Vila Gale Collection Braga is an amazing hotel set in a historic building. It looks beautiful from the outside and inside. It retains many classic features, despite some modern elements. There is also a swimming pool and a spa area. Perfect stay, I would love to come back here again.

Hotel Bracara Augusta

A very atmospheric, small hotel located in the very center of Braga. Very close to the old town. It is located in a stylish tenement house, perfectly adapted to modern standards. Very comfortable room and great food. We recommend not only breakfasts, but also lunches. There is a bit of confusion with parking, as the hotel only has four spaces.
