The small town of Guimaraes is located north of Porto . It is sometimes referred to as the cradle of Portugal . It was the first capital of the country, and it was also here that the first king of Portugal - Alfonso I was born. Despite losing the status of the capital city already in 1143, Guimaraes continued to develop, and many medieval buildings have survived to this day. One of the biggest attractions is the castle from the 10th century. Right next to it is the interesting palace of the Dukes of Bragancy , which today houses the Museum of Contemporary Art.

In the historic city center you will see a lot of interesting monuments, such as the Church of Mercy or the Church of Our Lady of Reconciliation. While strolling, you cannot miss the most important façade in the city, which bears the inscription "Aquiu Nasceu Portugal " or "Here is where Portugal was born". The historic downtown consists of many interconnected squares that surround historic buildings. Very well-preserved examples of medieval architecture have been widely appreciated in the world, due to the inclusion of the entire center on the UNESCO World Heritage List . On the outskirts of Guimaraes, there is Penha Hill , which houses the sanctuary. Tourists hungry for beautiful views can easily get there using the gondola lift.

For whom?

Guimaraes is a must-see for travelers interested in Portuguese history . The city has witnessed many important events in this country. Thanks to the numerous historic buildings, you will like it if you are a fan of medieval architecture . It can also be the perfect destination for a day trip for your vacation in the Porto area.

Hotel Mestre de Avis

Hotel Mestre de Avis is located right next to the old town. Theoretically, it only has two stars, but the decor and furnishings are of a very good standard. Comfortable and well-quiet room. It is worth choosing the option with breakfast. We liked both the city and the hotel very much. We were happy to extend our stay here for another day.

Hotel da Oliveira

A very good hotel located in a historic building right in the old town. It doesn't look very impressive from the outside, but the interiors are well renovated and offer a high standard. All the most interesting attractions are right next door. It was great to wander around the atmospheric streets in the evening.

Dom José Alojamentos

Dom José Alojamentos is a very atmospheric small hotel. The historic building and its amazing hall added charm to my stay in this interesting town. The room is well-equipped, friendly staff who will be happy to advise you where to go to eat tasty food. Very good price/quality ratio. I recommend!

Casa do Juncal

Great place to stay in Guimaraes. A historic property fully adapted to today's times and standards. All the biggest attractions very close. A minor minus is the parking lot a few hundred meters away, but for me it wasn't a big problem. A well-decorated and maintained garden where you can relax.

Santa Luzia ArtHotel

The hotel is not cheap, but definitely one of a kind. Everything is refined down to the smallest detail. At high temperatures, the water surrounding it creates a great atmosphere. Top-class service and food, plus a great relaxation area with a swimming pool on the roof. Staying here was an attraction in itself.
