Fagaras is a town located halfway between the much more famous cities of Sibiu and Braov , close to the impressive Fagaras Mountains. Its most important attraction is the impressive medieval fortress . Already in the 14th century, the first stone castle was erected on the site of the former wooden fortifications.

Over the next years, it was gradually expanded, and the last, larger renovation, the effects of which we can admire to this day, took place in the 17th century. At that time, it was one of the largest and most powerful castles in Transylvania. In the 18th century, it was transformed into a barracks, due to which the rich Renaissance interiors were neglected and partially destroyed. During the Second World War, interned Polish soldiers were imprisoned here. Currently, the impressive fortress, surrounded by a deep moat, is open to tourists. It houses a museum and a library. The area around the fortress is a nice park - a perfect place for walks. It is also worth paying attention to the new, but richly decorated church.
For whom?
If you're interested in medieval castles , don't miss the impressive Fagaras Fortress. Tourists who travel between Sibiu and Brasov should definitely stop and visit the museum here. Historians interested in Polish traces abroad can learn about the fate of their compatriots imprisoned here during World War II.
