Elafonisi

Elafonisi is a tiny island in the southwestern tip of Crete, connected to the mainland by a picturesque lagoon. The charming beach lying next to it , and one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Europe, bears the same name. Its characteristic element is pink sand.

Legend has it that it was supposed to be colored in this way by the blood of women and children murdered by the Turks. The actual explanation for its color, however, is not so drastic. The shade of pink was added to the sand by the shells mixed in it. This, in combination with the intensely turquoise water dotted here and there with single rocks, makes an amazing impression. Elafonisi can confidently compete with Laguna Balos for the title of the most beautiful. Which palm should be given priority? It's best to judge it yourself by visiting both of these beaches.
