Nizhny Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod (simply called Nizhny Novgorod or the third capital by the locals) is the Friday largest city in all of Russia. The biggest tourist attraction in Nizhny is the Kremlin , which offers a wonderful view of the Oka River and the Volga River. At this point, Dmitry Pozarski and Kuzma Minin gathered an army that pushed Poles away from Moscow in 1612. So where does the term third capital come from? Magnificent Saint Petersburg was the head of Russia, Moscow was her heart and Nizhny Novgorod was her wallet. Not a very honorable job, but for a while the city was called Gorky - in honor of the Russian writer.
