The Retezat Mountains are one of the most popular ranges in Romania. They look a bit like the Western Tatras . However, they are much wilder and less crowded than our native mountains. As a result, hiking the local trails can be an amazing experience and an adventure in itself. The highest peak of Retezat is Vârful Peleaga , which rises to a height of 2509 m above sea level .

In this range you can also find numerous postglacial lakes , which diversify the local landscapes. Due to the unique natural values, the mountains are protected under the national park. Although wild, Retezat also has several shelters and numerous hiking trails, allowing you to fully admire its natural beauty.

For whom?

Do you love mountain hiking , but prefer uncrowded and rarely traveled routes ? Then 100% Retezat will be the place for you. Even in the peak of the summer season, you won't meet too many tourists there.

Complexul Turistic Cheile Butii

For people going to Retezat, but not necessarily planning to spend the night in a tent, I recommend accommodation at Complexul Turistic Cheile Butii. The complex is located near road No. 66A, which runs at the foot of the range. Very good conditions for reasonable money. The opportunity to be surrounded by wonderful nature. And there are a lot of hiking trails in the area.

Noring Guest House

Our base in Retezat was the town of Lupeni and the Noring guesthouse located there. Simple conditions, but we didn't need any luxuries. We had a well-equipped kitchen and a pleasant garden at our disposal, where we could relax after mountain hiking. This is definitely a good option for not very demanding people.

Pensiunea Retezat Campu lui Neag

Retezat Campu lui Neag guesthouse is a great option for families traveling with children. The center offers many attractions for children. There is a playground, horse riding and sports fields. It's not very cheap, but the room conditions were top notch. Since the guesthouse is quite out of the way, we chose the option with breakfast (paid additionally). It was worth it.

Casa Luca

My wife and I stayed at Casa Luca in Vulcan. It's a short walk to Retezat National Park, but it took about 30-40 minutes to get to the trails by car. Very nice owners, great conditions. It was cozy there, like home!
