Maramures

Maramures is located in the northwestern tip of Romania and borders the territory of Ukraine . This region is often called the land of wood . All thanks to the many climatic villages where most of the houses are still made of wood. You will also find amazing historic churches in almost every one of them.

Several of them have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List . A unique attraction, which is one of the symbols of Romania , is the so-called The Happy Cemetery . There are wooden, hand-carved tombstones that show scenes from the lives of people buried there, often with witty poems. The idyllic climate of the entire region is complemented by the Maramures Mountains National Park and the Rodniańskie Mountains National Park .
