Biertan
Autorka, Travelbay
Biertan is a small, historic town with the best-preserved example of a fortified church in Romania. Historically, these areas used to belong to Transylvania, and the first temple was built in this place in the 14th century. Faced with the threat of attacks from the Ottoman Empire, the local population decided to fortify the church.

Over the next three centuries, as many as three rings of impressive defensive walls and gothic towers were created. In the 16th century, the temple was also expanded and the effects of these works can be admired here to this day. Inside, it is worth paying attention to the historic altar in the form of a triptych, the Gothic Renaissance pulpit and the finishing of the entrance portals. The temple, which resembles a castle, was never conquered, so it is preserved in its original form. The church, along with the surrounding fortifications, is located on a picturesque hill, from where there is a unique view of the entire town. The town is also known for its historical layout and original houses, most of which come from the 19th century. Both the town buildings of Biertan and the fortified church have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.
