Lake Ohrid

<p>This part of North Macedonia has the advantage that regardless of the season, there is something to do there. <strong>In winter</strong> , you can ski down the slopes of the ski resort or go to higher parts of the mountains on ski tours. <strong>In summer,</strong> tourists can enjoy hiking and cycling trails here. However, if you would like to take part in the festival in the village of Galičnik, then visit Mavrovo around July 12.</p>

When to visit Mavrovo?

<p>In addition to the opportunities to spend time actively, the Mawrowo National Park also has <strong>several interesting attractions</strong> . Most of them are located in close proximity. However, it is still worth having your own means of transport to reach them all.</p><h3> Lake Mavrovo </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/mawroro/mawroro-7.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Mavrovo" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Lake Mavrovo, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> Although <strong>Lake Mavrovo</strong> is an artificial reservoir, it cannot be denied that it is picturesque. It was created as a result of the construction of a hydroelectric power plant. On its banks there is the village of Mavrovi Anovi, where the information center of the national park operates. The biggest attraction of the lake are <strong>the ruins of a 16th-century church</strong> , which is partially submerged in the water.</p><h3> Duf Waterfall </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/mawroro/mawrowo-duf.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Mavrovo" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Duf Waterfall, Mavrovo, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> South-west of the lake, 30 minutes&#39; walk from <strong>the village of Rostushe</strong> , it is worth visiting the <strong>Duf waterfall.</strong> There is a well-marked trail leading to it, leading along the bottom of the Duf Canyon. It reaches a depth of about 60 m. This place allows you to take a break from the summer heat, as the temperature here usually oscillates between 18 and 20°C. The waterfall itself is <strong>25 high</strong> . In its immediate vicinity you can relax on wooden benches or splash in the water.</p><h3> Bigorski Monastery </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/mawroro/mawrowo-monaster.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Mavrovo" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Bigorski Monastery, Mavrovo, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> One of the biggest attractions of Mavrov is undoubtedly <strong>the Bigorski Monastery</strong> . It is considered one of the most important places of this type in North Macedonia. It is a monastery complex with several impressive buildings. The most characteristic are the clock tower and the church with an intricately decorated iconostasis. Most of the buildings were built in the 19th century, in place of a previously existing temple from the 11th century. The patron saint of the entire monastery is John the Baptist. The faithful from various parts of the country (but not only) come here to pray before <strong>the icon of this saint, famous for its miracles</strong> .</p><h3> Galicnik </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/mawroro/mawrowo-galičnik.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Mavrovo" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Galičnik, Mavrovo, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> The small village <strong>of Galičnik,</strong> located in the Mavrovo National Park, becomes an extremely noisy and crowded place once a year. In mid-July, a summer festival takes place here, the most important part of which is the Wedding in Galičnik. <strong>It refers to the wedding traditions of this region</strong> , which have been cultivated for many centuries. In the past, young couples could only get married on July 12. Then people who wanted to get married and their wedding guests came to the village. The celebration lasted 5 days and included various rituals and traditions related to the wedding. Currently, the Wedding in Galičnik lasts two days and attracts over <strong>3,000 guests</strong> from all over the world every year.</p>

Mavrovo National Park

<p>If you like spending time actively, you will definitely not be bored in Mavrovo National Park. The area is perfect for <strong>hiking</strong> , light walks and bicycle trips.</p><h3> Mavrovo ski resort </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/mawroro/mawroro-9.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Mavrovo" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Mavrovo, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> <strong>The Mavrovo ski resort</strong> is the most popular place for skiing and snowboarding in North Macedonia, especially among families with children and slightly less demanding skiers. There are <strong>11 ski lifts</strong> waiting for them here, including 3 chair lifts and 8 T-bar ski lifts. The slopes range from <strong>1,200 to 1,800 m above sea</strong> level. The lower stations of some of the lifts are located slightly above Lake Mavrovo. Most of the slopes are not very steep, although there are also some slightly more difficult routes. While riding on one or two boards, you can admire extensive views of the surrounding area.</p><h3> Trekking </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/mawroro/mawrowo-hiking.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Mavrovo" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Mavrovo, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> Mavrovo National Park offers quite a large number of hiking trails. However, the most popular of them is the one leading to the roof <a href="https://brate.com/pl/europa/macedonia/">of Macedonia</a> , i.e. <strong>Mount Korab (2,764 m above sea level)</strong> . The trail starts next to the Strezimir guard post, north-west of Lake Mavrovo. You can leave your car there and go on foot towards Koraba. The trail on the Macedonian side of this mountain is much simpler and slightly gentler than the one on the Albanian side. After leaving the forest line, the path meanders among meadows, offering extensive views of the mountains. The final approach to the top is a bit steeper, but it is overcome quite quickly. From the top of Koraba there is an amazing mountain panorama of Macedonia and Albania. Other interesting trails in Mavrovo National Park include <strong>the route to the Koza peak</strong> or <strong>the route from Galičnik to Janche.</strong></p><h3> Mountain biking </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/mawroro/mawrowo-kolarstwo-gorskie.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Mavrovo" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Mavrovo, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> If you prefer cycling, you will also find something to do in Mavrov. There are <strong>8 routes</strong> in the park ranging from a dozen to over 50 km long. One of the most popular bicycle routes is the one called <strong>Vrben</strong> . It is 30 km long and runs, among others, through the charming village of Vrben, the safari park and Mala Planina. Wonderful views guaranteed!</p>

Actively in Mawrow

<p><strong>Mawrowo National Park</strong> is located along the western border of the country and includes, among others Korab mountain massif. Within them there is the <strong>highest peak of Macedonia - Korab</strong> , which is also the highest peak of <a href="https://brate.com/europe/albania/">Albania</a> . The entire area of the park is an ideal place for practicing various forms <strong>of active tourism</strong> . Of course, the most popular are trekking, mountain biking and skiing. However, this area is also famous for interesting monuments and rich folk culture. Nearby, it is also worth visiting Kosovo, the town of <a href="https://brate.com/europe/kosovo/ferry/">Brod</a> .</p>

Hotel Bistra is located in the center of Mavrovo National Park, close to the lake and the ski resort. It was a good base for me to explore the area. The room price was affordable, the breakfasts were tasty and the service was nice.

Hotel Sport was perhaps not the most beautiful place I have ever stayed. But it had one main advantage - low price. The conditions are a bit like in old summer camps by the Polish seaside, but it&#39;s neat. Breakfast included, convenient access, large parking lot, close to the lake.
