Gauja National Park is one of the most beautiful places in Latvia in terms of landscape. It is the oldest and largest protected area (90,000 ha) in the country. It embraces the exceptionally picturesque meanders of the Gauja River , between Valmara and Murjani. This corner of Latvia is characterized by great biodiversity and numerous natural wonders.

The most popular attractions of the park are red sandstone cliffs and numerous caves , including Kalejala (the longest of all cave systems located there), Valnela and Liela Ellite. In addition, along Gauja you can find over 500 various monuments , including six medieval castles. This Latvian national park is best explored with a car, as the places of interest are spread over a large area. If you would like to concentrate on a selected part of this extraordinary region of Latvia, then you can consider cycling tours.

For whom?

On the one hand, Gauja National Park is a perfect place for fans of wild nature . Incredible vegetation, wonderful landscapes and majestically meandering river will be an inexhaustible source of inspiration, both photographic and walking. On the other hand, the park also offers a large number of monuments. That is why you will also like it when you want to go sightseeing.

Spa Hotel Ezeri

Since we planned a few days stay in Gauja National Park, we stayed at the comfortable Ezeri Hotel. It is located in Sigulda, thanks to which we were close to three strongholds located in close proximity. The hotel itself has a beautiful garden and an outdoor swimming pool. A room with a wonderful view and great equipment.

Ungurmuiža

This is an absolutely unique place, because it is a hotel located in a baroque, wooden palace from the 18th century! Staying there was an experience in itself for me. Not only because you can feel the spirit of the era. Also thanks to the great service, wonderful surroundings (beautiful park) and delicious meals.

Boutique Hotel Bersas

The Bersas boutique hotel was a great base for us to explore the Gauja Valley. It is located next to the town of Turaida. It is an extremely charming and intimate, high-class facility. Most importantly, it is open to pet owners. We could easily stay there with our dog. The hotel has beautiful interiors. And the breakfasts are first class!

Hotel Melturi

Hotel Melturi will be a good option for transit accommodation, but I think it may also be a good option for someone who wants to spend a few days in the Gauja National Park. It is located near the A2 motorway, 9 km from the town of Cesis. But surprisingly, it was quiet, peaceful, and a lot of greenery had a soothing effect. I really liked the breakfasts. The staff was nice, but mostly spoke Latvian/Russian.

Lindenhoff

Lindenhoff is a type of extremely atmospheric inn. My wife and I felt almost at home there. Incredibly homely, with wonderfully arranged green areas around. If someone wants to relax and get away from everyday affairs, this is the right place. And you must try the local apples! The room was nicely decorated. We could also use the communal kitchen.
