Meteors are an unusual rock formation whose landscape resembles a scenery from a fantasy movie. Even a very specific one, because there were, among others, in the famous series Game of Thrones. Bare rocks of the Meteora massif, however, fascinated much earlier, from the 11th century. First, the monks who chose it as their place of retreat and three centuries later began building 24 monasteries on their summit.

Today, only 6 of them are open to the public. The rest remains abandoned and falling into disrepair. This extraordinary combination of a miracle of nature and a masterpiece of architecture has been awarded a place on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. It is one of the most visited attractions in Greece, attracting 2 million tourists annually.

For whom?

If you like to follow the main tourist route, you shouldn't miss the Meteora. This mystical sky-high place is truly impressive. You will find a similar cluster of monasteries in Chalkidiki .
