<p>Alonissos is hot and humid in July, and muggy and still hot in August. The ideal time to stay on the island is May, June or September. When to visit Alonissos?

<p>Alonissos suffered serious damage during the earthquake in 1965 - many monuments were destroyed. So don&#39;t expect typical sightseeing, but rather peaceful walks around the towns and soaking up the Greek, idyllic atmosphere of these places.</p><h3> Patitiri </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/grecja/alonissos/alonissos-patitiri.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Alonissos" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Patitiri, Alonissos, Greece - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> Patitiri is the young capital of Alonissos, which was built in great haste after the earthquake. However, anyone looking for monuments in this city will be severely disappointed. You can only visit <strong>the Mavrikis Folklore Museum</strong> there, which recreates the history of the island with small exhibits, such as traditional costumes, works of art and war memorabilia. It is also worth going there for the wonderful view of the large <strong>port - the most important point of Patitiri</strong> , where all the urban activity is concentrated.</p><h3> Old Alonissos </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/grecja/alonissos/alonissos-old.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Alonissos" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Old Alonissos, Alonissos, Greece - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> Destroyed during the earthquake in 1965, the former capital of the island tries to preserve its history and at the same time open up to modernity. In the old town of Alonissos, see the monuments that survived the devastating earthquake: <strong>the castle</strong> and the stone <strong>church of Agios Athanasios</strong> from the 17th century, as well as <strong>the church of Agios Georgios</strong> with its beautiful icons, located at the highest point in the city.</p><h3> Ruins of ancient Ikos</h3><p> The first traces of human presence on the island from the Neolithic period and later times were found near the Kokkinokastro beach. Today you can see <strong>the ruins of the walls of the ancient settlement of Ikos and a cemetery there.</strong></p><h3> Kyra Panagia Monastery</h3><p> Alonissos is adjacent to Kyra Panagia - a mountainous, almost uninhabited island inhabited by only a few people. Its biggest attraction is the Kyra Panagia monastery built on a hill. It is <strong>a post-Byzantine religious complex from the 16th century</strong> , with a charming courtyard and a whitewashed church of the Virgin Mary. The monument is popular among tourists vacationing on Alonissos.</p>

What to see in Alonissos?

<p>There are a lot of beaches on Alonissos, but most of them are gravel, sand or gravel. All you need to do is reach the top of Mount Kunuli. It is <strong>the highest point on the island with a height of only 476 m</strong> . Climbing does not require great fitness. So don&#39;t look for excuses - the mountain will reward you with a wonderful view.</p><h3> Blue Grotto</h3><p> The Blue Grotto is not the only cave on the coast of Alonissos, but it is certainly <strong>the most famous.</strong> The water there has exceptional transparency and an amazing color, which seduces not only tourists, but also the rocks visible in it. During the trip you can admire the cliffs, enter caves and relax on wild beaches.</p><h3> Trekking</h3><p> The mountainous and forested area of the island encourages you to discover its beauty on your own feet. There is no shortage of hiking trails. The most popular one leads <strong>from the church of Agios Georgios through the Kastania Gorge to the beach of Agios Dimitrios.</strong> Another interesting option is a loop from Patitiri through the Kato Chorafi forest and the Vouno hill, famous for its spectacular sunset.</p>
