Weimar is a relatively small city (approx. 65,000 inhabitants), being a direct neighbor of Erfurt . It is a very important point on the map of Germany . Wemar has an extremely interesting history, which could be summed up in one statement - "Weimar classic" . This term is used in relation to the era in German literature at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, during which he wrote, inter alia, Goethe, Harder or Schiller.

They were active in Weimar after Princess Anna Amalia had brought them to the city. As a result, the entire city is steeped in memories of these outstanding artists. Museums, palaces and parks allow you to go back to the times when their works were created. However, Weimar's history as a city of intellectuals did not end in the 19th century. It was here that the Bauhaus , i.e. the art and craft university, was established, which later turned into a whole trend in architecture, considered one of the most important in the twentieth-century Europe. A visit to Weimar will therefore be a fascinating journey through the world of art. During your tour, be sure to check out the library founded by Princess Anna Amalia, visit the Bauhaus Museum , Goethe House, and the charming Park an der Ilm . However, it is also worth remembering the slightly darker history of Weimar. Buchenwald - one of the Nazi concentration camps - functioned to the north-west of the city. Currently, there is a museum on its premises reminding about the cruelty of World War II.
For whom?
You can write a lot about Weimar, but not that it is a boring city. If you are fascinated by history , with an emphasis on the history of literature, art or architecture, then this German city is a must-see. In addition, if you are planning a visit to Erfurt anyway, then you can easily find time to visit Weimar as well.
