Schmalkalden
Autorka, Travelbay
South of Erfurt lies the town of Schmalkalden. Although it's not very famous, it should be on your list of places to see in Germany. Why? First of all, because of the wonderful medieval atmosphere and numerous buildings with a half-timbered wall. One of the most important sights in Schmalkalden is the St. st. George, the town hall and of course Wilhelmsburg Castle . It houses a museum, but most tourists come here to admire the magnificent city skyline from its walls.

Another noteworthy place is the Museum Neue Hütte . It is evidence of the rich industrial history of this corner of Germany. During your visit you will be able to learn a bit more about smelting and processing iron. The pleasant atmosphere of the city will pass you quickly, and the fact that there are not many tourists here means that you will be able to get to know the slightly less commercial face of Germany.
For whom?
Visit Schmalkalden if you're looking for off-the-beaten-track destinations . A medieval atmosphere and several interesting monuments await you here. If you will be visiting Erfurt, Schmalkalden can be included in a short break.
