Saint-Laurent du Maroni is one of the nicest cities in all of French Guiana . Of course, in terms of tourism. St Laurent once served as a penal colony that has been released more widely to the world through the book and film Papillon . To this day, you can see the remains of typical penitentiary and colonial buildings. It is worth taking a look at Camp de la Transportation and Le Camp de la Relegation. There are also boats departing from the site up the Maroni River. Thanks to it, you will reach the villages of Marons, i.e. runaway slaves from French, Dutch colonies ( Suriname ).
