The Tatacoa Desert is one of the most surprising places in Colombia in terms of landscape. It is located south of Bogota, and the small town of Villavieja is an excellent base for visiting it. Desierto de la Tatacoa will delight you with its numerous gorges and amazingly carved rocks that were formed by rainfall.

Although it does not rain often here, the water was able to create this extraordinary area anyway. The temperatures can reach up to 50 ° C here, and due to the extraordinary transparency of the air and the lack of large urban centers in the vicinity, Tatacoa is the perfect place to admire the starry sky. For this reason, several astronomical observatories were established in the desert. The desert itself is divided into two parts. The most famous is where the rocks take on intense shades of ocher and red. Tatacoa is a popular hiking and cycling destination.

For whom?

If you dream of taking photos in one of the most instagrammable spots in Colombia, you should definitely visit the Tatacoa desert. You will also like it if you like to spend your holidays actively , e.g. cycling or hiking.

Tatacoa Star Eco Hotel

The hotel is located in Villavieja, which is an ideal base from which to explore the Tatacoa Desert. I spent two nights here and although there is no air conditioning in the rooms, I didn't complain too much. The facility has a great atmosphere, pleasant decor, and the service is very nice.

Hotel Colonial Villavieja

Before heading to the Tatacoa Desert, we stopped at the Colonial Hotel. It was a good choice. The hotel has a good standard, at a reasonable price. There is a swimming pool, which was a godsend in the summer heat. The room was not too big, but two people could comfortably live in it. Comfortable beds.
Hotel Villa Paraiso

Hotel Villa Paraiso

Hotel Villa Paraiso is a relatively new facility that I would recommend to less demanding tourists. Not because it is weak, but because there are no great luxuries to be found here. It's clean and quite spacious. You can use the swimming pool. Breakfast included.
HV Sueño Real Tatacoa

HV Sueño Real Tatacoa

This is probably one of the larger hotels in the Tatacoa desert area. It offers a swimming pool, bar, restaurant and garden. During my stay, it was not fully occupied, so it provided some semblance of privacy. My room was large and I liked it.
Mana Star Lounge Hotel

Mana Star Lounge Hotel

Overnight in the desert? This is exactly what Mana Star Lounge Hotel offers. An absolutely unique experience. Starry sky, piercing silence, amazing views in the morning. The wooden house may not offer luxury, but what counts in this place is nature. In addition, very nice owners who care for their guests with respect, openness and warmth.
