San Agustin

San Agustin is the most important archaeological site in Colombia and all of South America, and has been on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List since 1995. Parque Arqueológico de San Agustín is situated near the town of the same name, which offers a good hotel and gastronomic base.

What distinguishes the park? First of all, it covers a plateau with an area of 50 km² , in which a huge number of tombs have been discovered, and about 500 megalithic sculptures (depicting both people and animals) dating back to 5-400 AD. As a result, San Agustin is considered ... the largest necropolis in the world ! Of course, only a fragment of the whole was made available to tourists. Additionally, in close proximity to San Agustin, you will find two other archaeological sites: the Heights of Gods (Alto de los Ídolos) and the Heights of Stones (Alto de las Piedras).
