At the foot of the Andes lies the small town of Potosi . Already in the 16th century, this area was extremely industrialized. And all because of the silver ores discovered here, which were found within the Cerro Ricco mountain (meaning rich hill). It happened during the famous "gold rush". In this case, silver was found instead of gold, but it was still a big advantage for the city. Because Potosi started to develop very quickly and soon became the richest city in South America.

Now it is hard to believe at times. After the silver began to run out, Potosi declined and its inhabitants stopped doing as well as they used to. Currently, there are mines here that extract zinc and lead ores. It has been written more than once that the miners working here have terrible conditions. However, is it worth visiting Potosi at all? Yes! There is a lot of colonial, really beautiful architecture waiting for you in the city, some nice churches and interesting museums. It is also worth adding that Potosi was under the protection of UNESCO .

For whom?

Although Potosi is on the UNESCO list, it is rather an attraction off the main tourist routes . Mainly because it is a place for connoisseurs who will appreciate its rich history and heritage related to silver mining. You might like it here if you value colonial architecture and would like to explore the history of Spanish colonialism.

Recommended accomodations

Here are the accommodations that we can recommend with a clear conscience. We only recommend hotels that we have visited ourselves.

Cerro Rico

In Potosi I stayed at the Cerro Rico Hotel. This place met my expectations. There was a comfortable bed, a clean bathroom (hot water all the time, which is not always standard in Bolivian hotels) and very nice staff. The breakfasts were delicious. I can recommend it with a clear conscience.
Hotel Santa Mónica

Hotel Santa Mónica

Hotel Santa Monica turned out to be a really great choice. We only slept one night in Potosi, but we wanted a comfortable place. And this hotel absolutely met this requirement. It is a beautiful facility - pleasant architecture, interestingly arranged interiors. The room was very cozy and the air conditioning worked perfectly.
Hostal Colonial Potosi

Hostal Colonial Potosi

Comparing to other facilities in the city, I have the impression that this is probably the best hotel in Potosi. Everything is on point here. Beautiful interiors, recently renovated bathrooms, central heating (rather unusual for this country). Really high quality of services and a good location. What more could you want?
Hotel Santa Teresa

Hotel Santa Teresa

My wife and daughter and I spent two days at the Santa Teresa Hotel. We liked it there very much. Nice view from the window. Warm interiors (both the decor and the fact that there was heating and the temperature was very pleasant). There is a great restaurant on site - a large selection, high quality.
