El Sumidero is a beautiful canyon, protected by a national park (Parque Nacional Cañón del Sumidero), located about 5 km north of the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez. It was created as a result of two processes. First, cracks in the earth's crust. Secondly, the erosion caused by the Grijalva River flowing at its bottom. The El Sumidero canyon is 13 km long . Its impressive rock walls are up to 1000 m high!
