It is located in front of the small town of Mahahual, which is the best base for exploring Chinchorro Banco. Researchers have identified about 2,500 different species belonging to both flora and fauna that live in the atoll.

Some are even several hundred years old. This makes the atoll one of the most popular diving sites in Mexico. Chinchorro Banco is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve .
