Mukachevo

Mukachevo is the second largest city in Transcarpathia Ukraine. The most important attraction of the city is the Palanka Castle , which dates back to the 13th century. After numerous reconstructions over the centuries, today this amazing fortress consists of as many as three castles: low, medium and high, as well as an outer bailey with a dry moat and a drawbridge. It is the largest and best preserved defensive structure in the entire Transcarpathia . It houses a museum with a historical and ethnographic exhibition that shows well the turbulent history of these lands.

Mukachevo is called the city of three nations . For most of its long history, it belonged to the Hungarian Kingdom, then it was incorporated into Czechoslovakia, and in 1945, along with the entire Transcarpathia, it was incorporated into the USSR. Now it is part of Ukraine, but the Hungarian and Russian minorities and the influence of these nationalities are still present here. Outside the castle that dominates the city, head downtown to visit the Monastery of St. Nicholas from the 14th century and the historic town hall.
