Mukachevo is the second largest city in Transcarpathia Ukraine. The most important attraction of the city is the Palanka Castle , which dates back to the 13th century. After numerous reconstructions over the centuries, today this amazing fortress consists of as many as three castles: low, medium and high, as well as an outer bailey with a dry moat and a drawbridge. It is the largest and best preserved defensive structure in the entire Transcarpathia . It houses a museum with a historical and ethnographic exhibition that shows well the turbulent history of these lands.

Mukachevo is called the city of three nations . For most of its long history, it belonged to the Hungarian Kingdom, then it was incorporated into Czechoslovakia, and in 1945, along with the entire Transcarpathia, it was incorporated into the USSR. Now it is part of Ukraine, but the Hungarian and Russian minorities and the influence of these nationalities are still present here. Outside the castle that dominates the city, head downtown to visit the Monastery of St. Nicholas from the 14th century and the historic town hall.

For whom?

If you are fascinated by medieval fortresses , you will surely appreciate a visit to the well-preserved Palanka Castle. Additionally, when you are interested in the long and turbulent history of Transcarpathia, you will get to know it in Mukachevo. The city also surprises with interesting Hungarian influences.

Inn Leonard

A small but quite nice inn that was perfect for us for two nights. Peaceful and quiet neighborhood. It's a bit from here to the center, but you can walk to the castle. The room was clean and offered good conditions. A big advantage was parking on a private property.

Hotel Star

A really good hotel that is perfectly located in the city center. It has its own private, closed parking lot. It is not very modern, but it is kept in quite good condition and offers good conditions at a reasonable price. There is even a small swimming pool at your disposal. It worked great for me as a base for visiting the city. Right next to it is the brilliant Bogracz restaurant.

Vilni Kimnaty

Vilni Kimnaty is an interesting place with an artistic atmosphere. For us, staying overnight here was an additional attraction and definitely added charm to the entire trip to this area. The lovely host welcomed us very kindly. It was close to the center, and the castle was easily accessible by marshrutka. Another advantage is private parking.

Ferdinand

Hotel Ferdinand is located on the other side of the river from the city center. The old town can be reached within a not too long walk. The hotel maintains a quite high standard. My room was spacious and comfortable. Private closed parking and quite good breakfasts. A place worth recommending.

У Гуцула

A small hotel located in the very center of the city. Close to shops and close to the old town. It's also easy to get to the castle. Nicely decorated and atmospheric interiors. We really liked the breakfasts. Good place at a reasonable price.
