Mount Nemrut is the burial place of Antiochus I , who was the king of the small Kingdom of Commagene. The rock sculptures are to commemorate this ruler (and his gigantomania), who wanted to show his power even after his death. Indeed, the place is very impressive, both because of its location and the enormity of the whole project, which was the construction of a tomb on the top of this quite high mountain. Currently, Nemrut is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List , and is also considered one of the eight wonders of the world .
