Ararat, or more precisely Ağrı Dağı , meaning "difficult mountain", is the highest point of Turkey. It rises to a height of 5137 m above sea level . It is a dormant volcano and it is easy to recognize it in the Turkish landscape, because its top is covered with snow. The Ararat massif consists of two peaks, the Little and the Great, which, according to legend, are two sisters transformed into mountains. However, most people associate this summit in the context of the Bible and Noah.

Ararat, Turkey

According to the Book of Genesis , the ark created by Noah was supposed to settle in the mountains of Ararat. Certainly, some people choose this summit to tread on the biblical soil. The ascent to Ararat is considered quite difficult. Additionally, it is located in a militarized zone. Hence, it is required to hire a licensed guide and obtain the appropriate permit. Of course, this is done by local tourist agencies that help organize trekking to this highest point in Turkey .

For whom?

If you want to get Ararat, you have to answer one simple question. Have you ever walked in the mountains in winter and know how to use equipment such as crampons and ice ax ? You have to remember that the Ararat peak is covered with a layer of snow and ice all year round. An additional factor that makes it difficult to reach this mountain is its height. At over 5,000 meters above sea level, altitude sickness may occur. To avoid it, you need to undergo proper acclimatization. Additionally, it is an attraction for people with a slightly richer wallet . You will need to pay a guide fee, a trekking permit, and possible visits to historic sites along the itinerary.
