Saint Gallen

The city of St. Gallen is located near Lake Constance and less than 90 km from Zurich. Already in the 8th century, there was a Benedictine monastery in its area, but today the city is known primarily for its impressive Baroque abbey . The most important buildings are the cathedral with the original 10th-century crypt, and the library, which is one of the richest and oldest in the world. Many manuscripts are kept here. Some of them are over 1,000 years old, and in total there are over 170,000 documents.

The interiors of the library are considered the most beautiful example of Rococo rooms in all of Switzerland. Already in 1983, the entire monastic district was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When visiting the city, also spend some time walking around the historic old town. Its center is the market square surrounded by beautifully decorated tenement houses.
