Big Fatra is a mountain range that is part of the Western Carpathians, located in the central part of Slovakia. Its area is protected by the national park , which is considered to be one of the most unspoiled and lonely in the whole country. The highest peak - Ostredok, reaches 1592 m above sea level. Big Fatra has quite a varied landscape, which may bring to mind our native Bieszczady Mountains .

However, its terrain is not very demanding, so it is suitable even for less experienced hikers. Here you will find vast forest complexes, long valleys and scenic meadows. A well-developed network of hiking trails will surely help you when planning your mountain trips. The great advantage of this mountain range is that even during high season and long weekends, the local trails remain practically empty and allow you to fully enjoy the nature unchanged by man. When planning your stay in the Velka Fatra National Park, do not forget to visit an exceptionally atmospheric shelter, called Chata pod Borisov .
For whom?
If you do not like crowds on the trails , and prefer to wander in peace and quiet, then Velka Fatra will be the perfect place for you. A dense network of tourist routes will allow you to create an interesting plan for both a short trip and a longer trip. If you liked the famous meadows of the Bieszczady Mountains, then in Veľká Fatra you will also find vast meadows that offer spectacular views.
