Valaam or Wałaam is a beautiful, mainly forested archipelago of islands (about 50), the biggest attraction of which is the
Waawam Monastery . If you are not overwhelmed by the number of pilgrims in the area, this place is definitely worth seeing. There are plenty of small churches, chapels and sacred buildings. Initially, the monastery functioned as a fortress during the war with the Swedes (who completely destroyed it in 1611). It was rebuilt during the reign of
Peter the Great , but was burned just as quickly. The name comes from the Finnish language. After World War II, when the area around Lake Ladoga was taken over by the USSR, some of the monks moved to
Finland . [caption id = "attachment_86899" align = "alignleft" width = "500"]

For whom?
A very charming place, especially if you like to commune with nature and go sightseeing at the same time. One of the best options to see the island is by
renting a bike .
