Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal. It is located in the north-central part of the country. The highest peak is Torre. It is 1993 meters above sea level and in its upper part there is Portugal's only ski resort. In 1948, a seven-meter tower was added. Thanks to this, the highest point of continental Portugal could be 2000 m above sea level. You can easily get to the top by car, as there is an asphalt road leading there .

A nature park was established on an area of 88.850 ha. It is the largest protected area in the whole country. The rivers Mondego and Zezere have their source here. Massive rocks and boulders dominate the landscape, but there are also vast forests and pastures. The beautiful glacial valleys are also impressive. To get to know the beauty of the local landscapes better, go for a trek. The network of hiking trails, 375 km long, will help you in this. It is also worth trying the local specialty, which is Queijo Serra de Estrela cheese , which is made from sheep's milk according to old recipes.
