Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal. It is located in the north-central part of the country. The highest peak is Torre. It is 1993 meters above sea level and in its upper part there is Portugal's only ski resort. In 1948, a seven-meter tower was added. Thanks to this, the highest point of continental Portugal could be 2000 m above sea level. You can easily get to the top by car, as there is an asphalt road leading there .

A nature park was established on an area of 88.850 ha. It is the largest protected area in the whole country. The rivers Mondego and Zezere have their source here. Massive rocks and boulders dominate the landscape, but there are also vast forests and pastures. The beautiful glacial valleys are also impressive. To get to know the beauty of the local landscapes better, go for a trek. The network of hiking trails, 375 km long, will help you in this. It is also worth trying the local specialty, which is Queijo Serra de Estrela cheese , which is made from sheep's milk according to old recipes.

For whom?

Do you love wild nature ? A visit to Serra da Estrela is a must. Stunning landscapes, excellent viewpoints and stunning nature await you here. It is also a dream destination for active holidays . In summer you will be able to go trekking and in winter you will be able to ski.

Casa de São Lourenço - Burel Mountain Hotels

One of the most interesting hotels I have ever stayed in. Beautifully located and built in an amazing style. High-class services and a very comfortable room. The amazing pool was perfect for afternoon relaxation. Breakfasts were varied and very good. I recommend it to all mountain enthusiasts.

Pousada da Serra da Estrela

Pousada da Serra da Estrela is a large hotel, which is probably located in the building of a former sanatorium. At first he made a strange impression on us. But it turned out to be the perfect place to spend a few days with the kids. There is a swimming pool and a playground on site. The rooms were fine, we had no complaints. A huge plus for the amazing view from the window. A good base to get to know this region of Portugal better.

INATEL Manteigas

A modern hotel located just outside Manteigas. Peace and quiet and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. A good base to visit the local trails. In addition, it is close to the highest peak in the country. Our room was very comfortable and the beds were comfortable. We also liked the pool. The only minus is the average quality of the food. Breakfast is ok, but for dinner it's better to go somewhere else.

Casa das Penhas Douradas - Burel Mountain Hotels

A small hotel that surprised me with its style. This is not a typical hotel building. Thanks to this, you feel at home there. Super designed interiors. It's not cheap here, but the climate and conditions are at a very high level. Additionally, guests have a swimming pool at their disposal.

Casa Das Obras

Casa Das Obras is a very atmospheric, old manor house. I recommend it to those who want to hike in the Serra de Estrela mountains. The trails are close. The room was clean, comfortable and everything was missing. There is a swimming pool in the garden. It doesn't cost a fortune to stay there. I also recommend the local breakfasts.
