Soroca is a Moldavian city picturesquely situated on the Dniester River . Its most valuable monument, and one of the biggest attractions of Moldova, is a huge fortress . Its origins date back to the 15th century, when the entire Transnistrian fortification system was built to protect the territory of Moldova against the invasions of Turkish troops.

At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, this stronghold was in the hands of the Polish army. Later, after the fire, the building was deserted. Currently, however, it has been fully restored and made available to tourists. The mighty walls, 20 meters high, offer beautiful views of the Dniester and the surrounding area. Another important attraction of the city is "Świeczka" , a tall monument erected on one of the hills. There is a small church in its base. The city of Soroca is also known as the capital of the Moldavian Gypsies. An interesting place is the Gypsy district , where there are many richly decorated buildings, stylized as exclusive palaces.
