<p>Although most people visit Skopje in the summer, it is still worth considering another date. July and August are extremely hot in Macedonia. During hot summer days, Skopje turns into a red-hot oven, which is not conducive to sightseeing. Therefore, if you want to enjoy the opportunities offered by this city, visit it in <strong>May</strong> or <strong>from the end of September</strong> . <strong>Winter</strong> is also a good time to explore the Macedonian capital.</p>

When to visit Skopje?

<p>It is worth spending <strong>at least one day</strong> to visit Skopje. The ideal solution is to spend two days there. Thanks to this, you will be able to walk around the very center, but also visit places outside it, e.g. the ruins of the aqueduct or Mount Vodno.</p><h3> Stone bridge </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/skopje/skopje-8.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Skopje" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Skopje, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> One of the most important monuments of Skopje is undoubtedly <strong>the Stone Bridge</strong> , which connects Čaršija (the historic bazaar district) with the newer part of the city and Macedonia Square. It is <strong>214 m long and has 13 spans</strong> . It was built by the Turks, but it is not entirely known in what century it took place. The bridge offers a nice view of the Vardar flowing below and the modernly built Archaeological Museum and the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Sovereignty and Independence.</p><h3> Čaršija</h3><p> The most beautiful and oldest district of Skopje is <strong>Čaršija</strong> . It&#39;s actually a bazaar, with a thicket of narrow streets and low buildings where you can find souvenir shops, jewelers (good gold prices!), craft workshops, restaurants and cafes. In addition, there are several interesting buildings in this district. </p><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/skopje/skopje-1.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Skopje" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Skopje, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> Walking from the Stone Bridge, you first come to the <strong>Daut Pasha</strong> baths (Gotse Deltchev Boulevard) from the 15th century, where the Macedonian National Gallery currently operates. A little further there is <strong>Kapan An</strong> (Salih Asim Street), a former caravanserai (inn) also from the 15th century. Nowadays, it is worth stopping there for coffee or tea.</p><h3> Macedonian Museum</h3><p> In the bazaar district there is a quite interesting, although slightly underfunded, <strong>Macedonian Museum</strong> (Kjurchiska Street; closed on Mondays). It has a very interesting ethnographic exhibition and one devoted to World War I and II, as well as a rich collection of icons.</p><h3> Fortress </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/skopje/skopje-9.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Skopje" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Skopje, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> To the west of the bazaar district there is a hill with <strong>a fortress</strong> (Kale). Next to Mount Vodno, this is <strong>one of the best viewpoints</strong> from which you can admire Skopje. From the fortress there is a beautiful view of Vardar, the newer districts of the city and the aforementioned Vodno. This building has been rebuilt and changed over the centuries. However, after 1963, when the city was destroyed by an earthquake, the fortress also suffered greatly. Since then, it has only been partially reconstructed.</p><h3> Musuem of Modern Art</h3><p> On the same hill as the fortress, there is the building <strong>of the Museum of Contemporary Art</strong> (closed on Mondays). Even if you are not interested in broadly understood art, at least see the building itself. <strong>Three Poles were responsible for its design</strong> - Kłyszewski, Mokrzyński and Wierzbicki. They took part in the reconstruction of Skopje after the 1963 earthquake.</p><h3> Mustafa Pasha Mosque</h3><p> Below the fortress, it is worth visiting <strong>the largest mosque in Skopje</strong> , the Mustafa Pasha Mosque. It was built at the end of the 15th century. It has an arcade entrance and a roof topped with domes. The interior is decorated with beautiful paintings.</p><h3> Archeological museum </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/skopje/skopje.jpg?tr=n-hero" alt="Skopje" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Archaeological Museum, Skopje, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> On the bank of the Vardar, near the Stone Bridge, there is <strong>an impressive building of the Archaeological Museum.</strong> Although it looks old, this building was built recently. It has rich collections explaining the history of these lands. If you are a connoisseur of shells, thousands of coins and other artifacts, you will be delighted. The museum is closed on Mondays.</p><h3> Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Sovereignty and Independence </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/skopje/skopje-4.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Skopje" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Skopje, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> Adjacent to the Archaeological Museum is <strong>the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Sovereignty and Independence</strong> . This is quite an unusual museum, because you won&#39;t actually see any &quot;standard&quot; antiques, artifacts or age-old works of art. However, the exhibition allows you to go back in time to see what the Macedonians&#39; striving for independence looked like. You can visit the museum either under the supervision of a guide (speaking English or Macedonian) or on your own and wander through subsequent rooms where you meet Macedonian national heroes. They are presented in the form of quite realistic wax figures, shown during important events for the country. Staying in the museum is quite an interesting experience.</p><h3> Macedonia Square </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/skopje/skopje-7.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Skopje" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Macedonia Square, Skopje, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> Returning over the Stone Bridge towards the newer part of Skopje, you enter directly into the impressive <strong>Macedonia Square</strong> . In its central part there is <strong>a huge column</strong> , at the base of which there is a fountain, and on top of it stands a rider on a horse. This horseman is Alexander the Great, but he cannot officially be called that. There are streets radiating from the square, but the most important one is ul. Macedonian.</p><h3> Mother Teresa&#39;s house </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/skopje/skopje-muzeum-matki-teresy.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Skopje" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Mother Teresa Museum, Skopje, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> Mother Teresa of Calcutta actually came from Skopje. Currently, in the city center you can visit a small museum that also serves as a memorial house. <strong>Mother Teresa&#39;s house</strong> is located close to the intersection with the busy Dimitrie Chupovski Street. In the museum you can see a reconstruction of the room where Mother Teresa lived in her youth, as well as documents and photos. There is also a quite futuristic chapel here.</p><h3> City Museum</h3><p> At the end of the street <strong>The building of the former railway station</strong> is located on Macedońska Street. It is worth paying attention to its facade and the clock there. It still shows 5:17. It was at this time on July 26, 1963 that the earthquake began and destroyed 80% of Skopje&#39;s buildings. The former station now houses <strong>the City Museum</strong> (Kiril i Metodij Street; closed on Mondays). It presents the history of the city, especially the events related to the earthquake.</p>

What to see in Skopje?

<p>As befits the capital of the country, Skopje offers quite a lot of options for spending an evening with a drink, wine or beer.</p><h3> Pivnica Star Grad</h3><p> If <strong>you want beer</strong> and the best one in town, be sure to go to <strong>Pivnica Stary Grad</strong> (Samoilova Street). We offer a large selection of craft beers. The prices may not be the lowest, but the place has a really atmospheric atmosphere.</p><h3> Maenad</h3><p> <strong>Menada</strong> (ul. Podragje) is a combination of a club and a pub. <strong>A place with soul</strong> , very eagerly visited by Skopje residents and tourists. There are jazz and swing concerts and DJ parties.</p><h3> Club Epicentar</h3><p> If you are looking for a typical club where you can party until dawn, go to <strong>Club Epicentar</strong> (Bulevard Sveti Kliment Ohridski 60a). There are mainly electronic sounds playing there, it is crowded and noisy.</p>

Nightlife in Skopje

<p>Most tourists focus on the very center of the city. However, it is worth leaving it for a while to visit three quite interesting and nice places.</p><h3> Mount Vodno </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/skopje/skopje-vodno.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Skopje" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Vodno, Skopje, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> The Macedonian capital is dominated by Mount <strong>Vodno</strong> (1,066 m above sea level) with an impressive cross on the top. It&#39;s very easy to get to. Just catch a double-decker bus with the Millennium Cross sign at the bus station. It reaches Sredno Vodno, from where you can either go on foot or by <strong>gondola lift</strong> to the peak. Its upper station is located right next to <strong>the 66 m Millennium Cross</strong> . Vodno offers a beautiful view of the mountain ranges stretching to the horizon. From the top you can go trekking, e.g. to Matka Canyon.</p><h3> Aqueduct </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/macedonia/skopje/skopje-akwedukt.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Skopje" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Aqueduct, Skopje, Macedonia - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> To the north-west of the city center, near Boulevard Slovenia, you can find the impressive <strong>ruins of a former aqueduct</strong> . It has 50 arches and scientists are still wondering who built it and when. One thing is certain - few tourists come here, and the place is quite picturesque.</p><h3> Scupi</h3><p> The name Scupi is <strong>an archaeological park</strong> covering the ruins of the former, ancient city of Scupi (Skup, at Kup street). Generally, rather for enthusiasts, because the remains that have survived to this day are not very impressive.</p>

Off the trail in Skopje

<p><strong>Skopje</strong> , the capital of North Macedonia (formerly FYROM), is a city that <strong>evokes mixed feelings</strong> . On the one hand <strong>, you can feel the spirit of the past</strong> hovering over the charming bazaar district, i.e.Caršija. On the other hand, the <strong>city is filled with more or less successful monuments</strong> , the number of which can make you dizzy. Some people like this confusion of styles, others not necessarily. Nevertheless, it is worth visiting Skopje to form an opinion about this Macedonian city.
