Many people associate Tokaj with wine and the wine region in the first place. Only in the second place does it bring to mind the city of the same name. The region itself includes a total of 27 towns and vast stretches of vineyards located in the Tokajskie Foothills. The vast majority of it lies within the borders of Hungary, but a small part is also located in Slovakia .

Tokaj, Hungary

Grapevines were cultivated here already in the Middle Ages and it is one of the few places in the world where naturally sweet wine is produced. Tokaj was established as a closed wine region in 1737. Thanks to its long tradition, the entire area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002. The most popular drink for centuries has been sweet, dessert, white wine, in several different varieties. Many vineyards and cellars are open to visitors. Most of them offer wine tastings or gourmet dinners, prepared exclusively from local produce. In the city of Tokaj, it is worth going to the Tokaj Museum , and to the main square with a fountain. Right next to it, there is the Rakoczy family cellar , which is 1.5 kilometers long. If you are also thirsty for beautiful landscapes, then go to the vantage point above the city or take a boat trip on the Tisza River.

For whom?

If you consider yourself a wine connoisseur or just like to drink it , Tokaju shouldn't be missed. After all, it is one of the most famous wine regions in the world. If you would like to learn more about the tradition and history of liquors produced here, then you have to go to the Tokaj Museum. In addition, if you are tired of visiting big crowded cities, you will surely like the small town of Tokaj as well as other climatic towns of the region.

Tokajvár Hotel

A very pleasant, small hotel located in the very center of Tokaj. A big plus for Hungary is the fact that every staff member spoke English. Besides, we had a spacious and well-equipped room. We really enjoyed the breakfasts, and another advantage was free private parking.

A great place to spend a few days in Tokaj. The hotel is located in an atmospheric, historic tenement house, close to the city center. Very nice room, and a brilliant restaurant downstairs. I recommend it not only for breakfast. It is also worth eating dinner and drinking local wine here. The hotel has a large, private, free parking lot. I'd love to come back here again.

Böne Vendégház és Borozó

We were welcomed with a glass of local wine, of course, and from there it only got better. Very good conditions at a reasonable price. There is a wine bar downstairs, which offers a full range of local drinks. A great place, because at least you don't have to go anywhere, only what the entire region is famous for is nearby. It's worth paying extra for breakfast.

The biggest advantage of the guesthouse is its surroundings. A well-kept garden and a gazebo that is a great place to relax. The room was spacious and well decorated. Additionally, it is very close to the main promenade and the old town. It's worth taking the breakfast option because it was delicious.
