Holloko
Autorka, Travelbay
Holloko is a small, charming village in the north of Hungary. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was almost completely destroyed by a huge fire. Soon after it was rebuilt in such a way as to fully preserve its former character. Already in 1987 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List . Today it is an ideal example of a traditional Hungarian countryside. Holloko is a kind of a living ethnographic open -air museum. People who cultivate old traditions still live here normally.

What will you see in Holloko? A centrally located church with a wooden tower and over 50 historic, whitewashed cottages . Some of them feature attractions such as an antique weaving mill or a traditional pottery workshop. Also noteworthy are the ruins of the castle, which picturesquely rise above the village. The history of the Holloko stronghold dates back to the 13th century. Currently, the facility is restored, and within its walls you will see an ethnographic exhibition. In the summer season, interesting themed events and knight tournaments take place here. The culture of the Polovske Highlanders is cultivated throughout Holloko to this day, who retain their unique dialect and wear classic folk costumes on a daily basis.
