The Bavarian Forest was under protection as part of the national park (now the oldest in Germany) as early as 1970. As its name suggests, it is located in Bavaria and stretches along the border with the Czech Republic. Together with the Šumava National Park on the Czech side, they form one of the largest protected areas in Central Europe. The creators of the national park had one main idea - to leave the environment here as intact as possible .

Thanks to restrictive, although sometimes controversial methods, despite the enormous damage caused by windfalls and the bark beetle plague, at this moment the forest prides itself on its great biodiversity . Here you can observe wild eagle owls, Ural owls, ravens, otters, capercaillies and many other animals. The park is interesting thanks to the varied landscape of wide valleys, rivers, numerous mountain streams, the Rachelsee glacier lake and rocky mountains. The highest peak is the Großer Arber , which reaches 1,456 meters above sea level and is known as the King of the Bavarian Forest , and can be explored through a network of hiking and biking trails totaling 500 km. You can learn about the interesting history of the Bavarian Forest National Park and more information about the local nature at the St. Oswald , and at the Hans-Eisenmann-Haus information center.

For whom?

If you value nature in its most intact form, then be sure to visit the Bavarian Forest. After all, this region is famous for its approach that minimizes human influence in the local natural processes. If you like to spend time actively outdoors, you will surely find interesting hiking and cycling routes here.

Landhotel Moorhof

A small modern hotel, located next to the Bavarian Forest National Park. It may not have been the cheapest offer in this area, but we were tempted by the sauna and swimming pool, which turned out to be a great option after long walks along the surrounding trails. Modern and comfortable room, very good breakfast. We had no reason to complain.

Gästehaus Schreiner

A typical, family-run guesthouse. For us, it was a great base to get to know the Bavarian Forest better. It was close to hiking trails, and there was also plenty to do on bikes in the area. A good place to relax and rest. Very nice hosts and good conditions at reasonable prices.

Hotel Eibl-Brunner

A hotel where we spent a very pleasant 5 days, even though initially we only wanted two. Nicely located, on the outskirts of a small town. We were close to the mountains and many trails, viewpoints and attractions. The hotel itself offers a very good standard, and one of its biggest advantages is a very nice, heated swimming pool and a small SPA. A great place to relax and recharge your batteries.

Pension Waldkristall

Despite the name, it is not a guesthouse, but rather a small hotel. We received a room in the newer part of the building and it was very tastefully decorated and well-equipped. Comfortable beds and exemplary cleanliness. There is a very good restaurant downstairs that serves tasty breakfasts, but it is also worth visiting for dinner. A very good starting point for exploring the Bavarian Forest.

Zur Alten Dampfsäge - Gasthaus-Pension Weber

A very nice guesthouse, straight from which you can set off on the trails of the Bavarian Forest. Great location in a small town. The room was comfortable and lacked nothing. There is a good restaurant downstairs, so we didn't even have to look anywhere else for dinner. We have nice memories of staying here.
