Uplisciche

Uplisciche is one of the oldest urban centers in Georgia. It was carved in the rock rising above the Kura River . Thanks to its central location and the vicinity of an important trade route, it used to be a very important place of commercial and religious importance. In its heyday, approx. 20 thousand people lived here. people, in over 700 hollow caverns. In the Middle Ages, the importance of the city declined in favor of the thriving Mtskheta and Tbilisi .

After numerous Mongol attacks, it was abandoned in the 14th century. The destruction was also completed by the strong earthquake in 1920. Currently, you can admire about 150 partially preserved caves , and the 9th-century Christian basilica located on the top of one of the rocks. Although most of the historic houses are in ruins, you can still see many interesting decorations from different periods and in different styles. Hiking the rock carved into the city also offers spectacular views of the entire river valley . Currently, there is also a museum here , where you can see jewelry, weapons and tools that belonged to the people who once lived here.
