Ananuri

Ananuri is a medieval fortress that is one of the main attractions of the famous Georgian Military Road . The first fortifications were built in this place in the 13th century. Over the years, the castle was rebuilt and enlarged. Today, you can admire the impressive defensive walls that surround, among others, Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Its richly decorated interiors with impressive frescoes are worth visiting. Another important point of the complex is the seven-story seventeenth-century Sheupovari tower. In the past, it combined residential, observation and defense functions. Within the walls there is also a smaller temple and a belfry. The fortress is situated on a hill with the waters of the huge Zhinvali artificial reservoir on three sides . There are beautiful views from the walls , not only of the lake, but also of the surrounding mountains.
