You will have to cover over 2,200 km. On the way, however, you will pass interesting cities worth a stop, such as <a href="https://brate.com/pl/europa/francja/paryz/">Paris</a> or <a href="https://brate.com/pl/europa/francja/rennes/">Rennes</a> . You can also get to these centers by plane and from there by train to Quimper.</p>

When to visit Quimper?

<p>Quimper, although one of the largest cities in the region, has a rather small-town atmosphere, which distinguishes it from popular cities such as Nantes or Rennes. <strong>A few hours will be enough to visit</strong> the most important symbols of the city <strong>: the cathedral and half-timbered houses</strong> in the old town, as well as a walk along the bank of the Odet River. However, Quimper can also be an original <strong>destination for a weekend trip.</strong> In this case, it is worth <strong>including museums and gardens in your trip plan.</strong></p><h3> St. Cathedral Corentina </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/francja/quimper/quimper-3.jpg?tr=n-hero" alt="Quimper" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Cathedrale Saint-Corentin, Quimper, France - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> St. Cathedral Corentina (Cathedrale Saint-Corentin) is <strong>the largest and one of the oldest temples in Brittany.</strong> It delights with the soaring soaring characteristic of the Gothic style and the majestic slenderness of the façade <strong>&nbsp;</strong> and the intricate workmanship of architectural elements. The cathedral, although dating back to the 13th century, retains elements of later times, including polychrome and stained glass windows from the 15th century and a 19th-century chapel dedicated to Breton saints. Also note the medieval tombs and the statue of the legendary King Gradlon.</p><h3> Bishop&#39;s Palace</h3><p> The Bishop&#39;s Palace (Palais Episcopale) is adjacent to the cathedral. According to legend, King Gradlon gave this residence to the first bishop, Corentin. However, there is no trace of this building, and what we can see today is <strong>a 16th-century structure</strong> . The oldest elements of the palace include <strong>the Rohan tower</strong> from 1507 and the impressive, intricately decorated <strong>Rohan stairs</strong> . They lead to the first floor, to the most representative part of the palace. It is worth paying attention to the elegant interior design of the former bishop&#39;s apartments.</p><h3> Breton Museum</h3><p> Currently, the building is the seat of <strong>the Breton Museum</strong> (Musée departmentemental Breton), which presents the artistic and ethnographic heritage of the region since prehistoric times. The exhibits include artifacts from the Gallo-Romanesque period, <strong>examples of Romanesque and Gothic sculptures, stained glass</strong> and everyday objects (furniture, clothing). Another interesting element of the exhibition is <strong>the collection of faience.</strong></p><h3> Museum of Fine Arts</h3><p> 160 m away there is another interesting museum - the Museum of Fine Arts (Musée de Beaux Arts). It is <strong>one of the most important institutions of this type in Brittany.</strong> It is located on Cathedral Square, within the walls of a classic palace designed by Józef Bigot. It presents outstanding works by Nordic, Italian and French painters, as well as <strong>a rich collection of native Breton artists.</strong></p><h3> Old Town </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/francja/quimper/quimper-1.jpg?tr=n-hero" alt="Quimper" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Quimper, France - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> The Old Town is a network of cobblestone streets lined with <strong>half-timbered houses.</strong> There are <strong>73 such buildings</strong> left in the city. Characteristic of the whole of Brittany, they best reflect the color of this region. Some of them stand on <strong>Rue Kereon, a commercial street</strong> where the shoemakers&#39; guild used to be based. The alley has not lost its commercial character to this day, although now there are mainly shops and restaurants there.</p><h3> Butter Square</h3><p> Rue Kereon is only 260 meters from the most beautiful corner of Quimper. This is Place au Beurre. Its name is no longer surprising when you consider the historical aspect of this place where butter was once sold. Don&#39;t come there full. <strong>The square is famous for the best crepes in the city.</strong></p><h3> Church of Notre-Dame of Locmaria </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/francja/quimper/quimper-10.jpg?tr=n-hero" alt="Quimper" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Quimper, France - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> The Church of Notre-Dame of Locmaria and its adjacent monastery are the heart of the Locmaria district, where the history of Quimper began. <strong>It is the oldest religious building in the city</strong> and one of the oldest in Brittany, dating back to the beginning of the 11th century. Rebuilt many times, it has not lost its Romanesque character. Inside, it is worth paying attention to: tombstones, <strong>a 15th-century statue of Our Lady of Locmaria</strong> and a unique Way of the Cross made by potters.</p><h3> Henriot-Quimper faience factory</h3><p> <strong>The tradition of making faience</strong> was also born in the Locmaria district. It dates back to the 17th century, when the Henriot-Quimper faience factory (Faïencier <strong>&nbsp;</strong> Henriot-Quimper). The plant has been operating continuously until today. It produces hand-painted ceramic products, from utilitarian items such as dishes to purely decorative ones. <strong>The factory is open to visitors.</strong> During a half-hour tour, you will look at the faience production process and learn about the history of this type of ceramics.</p><h3> Faience Museum</h3><p> An interesting complement to the visit to the Henriot-Quimper factory is a visit to the Faience Museum (Musée de la Faïence de Quimper). It is located nearby, on the premises of an old pottery factory. <strong>It presents half a thousand faience products</strong> . Many of them are unique. Much is waiting to see the light of day; the entire collection numbers over 2,000 exhibits. Their decorations refer to history, religion, everyday life or depict abstract drawings.</p>

What to see in Quimper?

<p>Quimper - the city of flowers and gardens. The latter have twice been awarded the main prize in a competition promoting green areas in cities throughout France.</p><h3> Locmaria Garden</h3><p> The Locmaria Garden <strong>(Le jardin de Locmaria)</strong> is located near the monastery in Locmaria and refers to the historical and religious character of this place. <strong>It was created after the model of monastery gardens.</strong> Even medieval plants are grown there. <strong>Subtle sacred symbolism adds additional charm to it.</strong> The water gushing from the fountain brings to mind paradise rivers, and the oak pergola resembles a heavenly vault. Well... it&#39;s hard to deny the mystical atmosphere of this place.</p><h3> Max Jacob Theater Garden </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/francja/quimper/quimper-4.jpg?tr=n-hero" alt="Quimper" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Quimper, France - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> The garden of the Max Jacob Theater (Le jardin du Théâtre Max Jacob) <strong>is one of the oldest gardens in the city.</strong> It is located next to the Max Jacob Theater. The style refers to the gardens of English romanticism. You can find rare and <strong>diverse plant species</strong> and old trees there. Its most picturesque element is <strong>the rose garden.</strong> Beautiful avenues covered with herbs and grass lead to it.</p><h3> Le jardin de la Retraite</h3><p> This garden cultivates a tradition started by 16th-century sailors who brought various plants from their distant expeditions. Inside the garden, behind thick walls, there is a completely different world. There are: <strong>a palm grove</strong> , <strong>tropical and field plants</strong> , and even a part of the Mexican desert. A walk through this unique park is like traveling through continents.</p><h3> Stangala Valley</h3><p> Stangala Valley <strong>(</strong> Les <strong>&nbsp;</strong> gorges du Stangala <strong>)</strong> is located a few kilometers from Quimper. The forested slopes of the ravines descend directly into the Odet River, creating an amazing scenery. It reveals its most beautiful face when viewed from the natural <strong>Point Griffonès viewpoint</strong> . It offers views of the valley and the winding Odet River. The best way to get to the Stangala Valley is by car and parking at <strong>the Griffonès car park</strong> . There are designated bicycle and walking routes in the gorge. The crossing takes about <strong>2 hours.</strong></p>

Nature in Quimper

<p>It turns out that in order to be at the end of the world, you don&#39;t have to go far, just to ... France. More precisely to Quimper, the oldest center in Brittany, which is the cradle of its historical and cultural heritage. </p><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/francja/quimper/quimper-4.jpg?tr=n-hero" alt="Quimper" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Quimper, France - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> It belongs to the prefecture of the department of <a href="https://brate.com/europe/france/finistere/">Finistere</a> , whose name literally translates to the <em>end of the earth</em> . While it seems like a more accurate word, it would be <em>the end of France</em> . <strong>This area is located at the westernmost point of the Hexagon.</strong></p><h2> For whom?</h2><p> You will appreciate the historical and cultural value of Quimper if you are interested in its monuments. This resort has been included in the prestigious group <strong>of History and Art Cities for a reason.</strong> There will also be plenty of attractions for you when you dream of relaxing among nature <strong>.</strong> Quimper is famous for its <strong>unique gardens</strong> that are unmatched in the country.</p>

Hotel de la Gare turned out to be the best for me in terms of location. It is located opposite the station, less than a kilometer from the old town. Perfect for non-motorists. The room was not very large, but perfect for a weekend stay. It was clean, tidy. It&#39;s just a pity that breakfast was not included in the price.
