Viljandi

Viljandi is the sixth largest city in Estonia and at the same time one of the oldest, as evidenced by numerous monuments. It was granted town privileges as early as 1283, and a moment later a huge castle was erected here. The Poles who took the city during the Polish-Swedish war also entered the history of the city.

As a result of numerous invasions, the castle was finally destroyed, but its ruins, which are one of the city's greatest attractions, have survived to this day. Situated on a slope above the picturesque Vilja Lake , they offer sweeping views and pleasant walking areas. In the area adjacent to the castle there is also a historic suspension bridge from the 19th century. It is also worth visiting the 15th-century church of St. Jana, and walk the atmospheric streets of the old town, along which you can encounter classic wooden villas from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The city is also known as the Estonian Capital of Culture and apart from many concerts and exhibitions, the famous Folk Music Festival has been held here for over 20 years. The location of the city on a hilly terrain and among lakes allows for pleasant walks with beautiful views.
