Saaremaa is the largest island in Estonia. From the mainland, it can be reached by ferries sailing from the city of Virtsu to its neighbor, the island of Muhu. From there, a dyke leads to the Saarland, from which there is a beautiful view of the sea. Why is it worth visiting the largest of the Estonian islands at all?

First of all, to taste in its unique atmosphere. The island was shaped by its turbulent past and the fact that it changed hands at some point. In the 20th century, it came under the rule of the Red Army, which decided to create a militarized zone out of it. As a result, mere mortals could not come there. Currently, it is very popular. First of all, because of the wonderful nature. Here you can see craters after impacts of meteorites (Kaali Crater). The island is also famous for its picturesque windmills and sea lighthouses . It is also worth visiting the only town on the island, i.e. Kuressaare with a seafront castle and traditional wooden buildings.

For whom?

The island of Saaremaa will be the perfect travel destination if you are looking for picturesque places where you will be able to stay in the great outdoors. It is also a good proposition when you want to relax . On the island you will find numerous chalets for rent which, in addition to a garden, also offer a sauna and other amenities.

Laugu Holiday Resort

My wife and I spent 5 days on the island of Saaremaa. Our base was the Holiday Resort in Laugu. Here you can feel the true spirit of Estonia and the island itself. The hotel is located in a historic farm. There is a lot of green. Very close to the sea. Very nice owners. And these breakfasts – heaven in your mouth!

Mardi Farm Stay

I absolutely recommend staying at Mardi Farm, in Karala. This place has the atmosphere of an open-air museum, but in a modern version. The houses refer architecturally to the building traditions of the region, but offer all modern amenities. The entire area is beautifully landscaped - lots of greenery, flowers in summer. You can fall in love with this place.

Johan Design & SPA Hotel

This hotel is located in the center of Kuressaare. My fiancée and I decided on it mainly because of the SPA and good reviews on the Internet. We were not disappointed, although of course we paid more for our stay than if we had rented a summer house. The facility is modern and nicely decorated. Delicious breakfasts. The only drawback was the small parking lot.

Mere Puhkemaja

Since we decided to spend a week on the island, we decided to rent the entire house. Our choice fell on Mere Puhkemaja, in the town of Kungla. It is a wooden, modern building, located among trees, practically on the seafront. Strong 11/10! Fully equipped, offering perfect conditions. Perfect for a family stay!

Kooli Kopli Holiday Homes

If you are planning a stay on the island, renting a holiday home is a really good choice. I recommend those offered by Kooli Kopli Holiday Homes. I rented a house in Mustjala. The idyllic atmosphere of the countryside. Charming house, surrounded by nature. It's a short walk to the sea, but it's a short ride by bike or car.
