Brijuni

Brijuni National Park was founded in 1983 and covers an archipelago of 14 islands. It is located in close proximity to Pula and Fazana. The latter is a kind of base for exploring the archipelago. The islands are famous for their exceptionally lush vegetation and a slightly milder climate. These qualities were appreciated already at the end of the 19th century. The Austrian industrialist decided to adapt the largest of the islands (Veli Brijuni) into an exclusive resort. The first hotels and recreational areas were built. Later, however, the island was taken over by Tito, who made a summer residence there . He hosted dignitaries from all over the world, founded a zoo to which he brought animals from his travels abroad. Today, Veli Brijuni is a popular destination for boat trips from Pula or Fazana .
