<p>Višegrad is an excellent destination for holiday sightseeing and relaxation. In summer, the heat is not so troublesome here. And even if they do appear, thanks to Drina you can somehow survive them.</p>

When to visit Visegrad?

<p>All the most important attractions of Višegrad are located in close proximity. From here, it takes literally 2-3 hours to explore the city itself. However, when planning a cruise on the Drina, it is worth having a whole day at your disposal.</p><h3> Bridge over the Drina </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/bosnia-i-hercegowina/visegrad/visegrad-4.jpg?tr=n-hero" alt="Visegrad" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Bridge over the Drina, Visegrad, Bosnia and Herzegovina - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> The bridge on the Drina, or more precisely <strong>the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge</strong> , was built by the Turks in the second half of the 16th century. It has 11 spans connected by arches ranging from 11 to 15 m. The entire bridge is 179.5 m long and arouses admiration with its monumental architecture. This is one of the reasons why <strong>it was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List</strong> in 2007. It is not only worth taking a walk along it, but also climbing to the viewing point located on the opposite bank of the river from the old town. It offers a beautiful view of the Drina, the bridge and Višegrad itself.</p><h3> Andricgrad</h3><p> In 2011, <strong>Emir Kusturica</strong> started his next project in the Balkans. After he created Drvengrad in Serbia, he decided to build a place commemorating the famous writer Ivo Andrić. His choice fell on Višegrad, the hometown of the Nobel Prize winner. On the headland formed between the Drina and the Rzav river flowing into it, <strong>the Andrićgrad (or Kamengrad) district</strong> was built, with tenement houses, an Orthodox church, cobbled streets and squares. </p><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/bosnia-i-hercegowina/visegrad/visegrad-andricgrad.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Andricgrad Visegrad" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Andricgrad, Visegrad, Bosnia and Herzegovina - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> The whole thing is surrounded by walls and at first glance it looks like a typical old town. Only that it was built today, but according to old standards. In Andrićgrad you can find restaurants and cafes, there is a cinema and several shops. In the central part of the district there is a monument to Ivo Andrić. From time to time, Kamengrad becomes a space for new film productions. Undoubtedly, Andrićgrad is as unique as its creator, Emir Kusturica, and a bit crazy, like the entire Balkans.</p><h3> Boat trips on the Drina </h3><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/bosnia-i-hercegowina/visegrad/visegrad-9.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Visegrad" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Visegrad, Bosnia and Herzegovina - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> One of the biggest attractions of Višegrad are <strong>boat trips on the Drina</strong> organized from there. They usually last from approx. 11 until evening. During the cruise you can admire the amazing <strong>canyon</strong> carved by the Drina; reach the place where <strong>the Zepa River</strong> flows into it; see a small, picturesque <strong>island</strong> on the Drina. Often, the price of the trip also includes a meal and free time on land. However, if you do not have the whole day at your disposal, you can opt for a short, 30-minute boat trip. Along the way, you&#39;ll be able to take photos of the bridge and the city from the perspective of the river.</p><h3> Višegrad Spa</h3><p> 4 km northeast of the city center you can find a place known as <strong>Višegrad Spa</strong> (Višegradska Banja). It is located at an altitude of 414 m above sea level, surrounded by dense pine forests. It may have developed as a health resort thanks to <strong>the thermal springs</strong> found there. They reach a temperature of 34ºC and are characterized by... <strong>radioactivity</strong> . But in this case it has a beneficial effect on health. Especially due to radon. This element can reduce pain, increase the body&#39;s immunity and eliminate some allergies. However, water from Višegradska Banja is also used to treat rheumatic, gynecological and musculoskeletal diseases. </p><figure id="attachment_71597" class="wp-caption alignleft hero-image"><img class="size-medium wp-image-71597" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/bosnia-i-hercegowina/visegrad/visegrad-6.jpeg?tr=n-hero" alt="Visegrad" width="500" height="326"><figcaption class="caption"> Visegrad, Bosnia and Herzegovina - © Brate</figcaption></figure><p> There is a rehabilitation center and the Villa Vlas hotel on site. Much more interesting, however, is <strong>the hamam</strong> , or Turkish bath. It was built at the same time as the Drina Bridge, i.e. in the second half of the 16th century. It can still be used, and reservations can be made directly at the hotel. While in the area, it is also worth visiting the small, picturesque <strong>church of St. Jovana</strong> . The area around the temple is a popular picnic area for both visitors and residents of Višegrad.</p>

Monuments of Visegrad

<p>Perhaps the most famous book from the Balkan Peninsula is <em>Most na</em> Drinie by Ivo Andrić. Its action takes place in <strong>Višegrad</strong> and begins when the Turks build a stone bridge. Andrić was awarded the Nobel Prize for lifetime achievement, and Višegrad itself - the author&#39;s hometown, attracts fans of his literature. Including for this reason, <a href="https://www.filmweb.pl/person/Emir+Kusturica-255">Emir Kusturica</a> - the famous director, built <strong>Kamengrad, also known as Andrićgrad, there</strong> . It is a specific district of the city, with several buildings and squares, which is to commemorate the life and work of Ivo Andrić. </p><div id="attachment_60752" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 500px;"><img class="size-medium wp-image-60752" src="https://media.brate.com/images/europa/bosnia-i-hercegowina/visegrad/visegrad.jpg?tr=n-hero" alt="Wyszegrad, Visegrad, Bosnia Herzegovina, Drina Bridge" width="500" height="333"><p class="caption"> Visegrad, Bosnia and Herzegovina - © Brate</p></div><h2> For whom?</h2><p> Višegrad will appeal not only to fans of Ivo Andrić or Emir Kusturica. Above all, it is a city where you can feel the atmosphere of the Balkans. Unhurried sightseeing, combined with relaxing by the river with a cup of strong black coffee, will be a perfect idea for everyone.</p>

Hotel Višegrad is located right on the bank of the Drina and offers a beautiful view of the famous stone bridge. And in terms of location, in my opinion it is the best place in the whole city. The rooms don&#39;t offer much luxury, but they are clean and quite nice. The price for the stay was not excessive. WiFi could work better. But that was the only thing I could complain about.

Hotel Višegrad

I chose the Aura Motel because of the low price. It is located on the other side of the river from the old town, a bit more out of the way. The rooms are quite large, neat and perfect for one or two nights. Unfortunately, the staff does not speak English, so communication was a bit difficult. Breakfasts (paid extra) were quite tasty.
