The city of Ypres has a very long and turbulent history. Its origins date back to the 10th century. In the Middle Ages, when the textile trade developed here, it experienced its greatest splendor. Then, during many years of invasions and occupations, it fell into decline. And during World War I, as a result of fighting, Ypres was practically razed to the ground. Fortunately, later its historic old town was carefully restored and today you can admire many impressive sights here.

The most important building of Ypres is undoubtedly the impressive Lakenhal cloth hall . Their construction began in 1200 and took over 100 years. For centuries it was the heart of a city where trade flourished. The belfry , which is the oldest part of the building, has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List . Other interesting objects are the thirteenth-century church of St. Marcin, and the buildings of the court and commercial court. There are also many memorials and monuments dedicated to the victims of World War I in the city, and the Menin Gate is the most impressive. Today Ypres is called the "city of peace" , and a museum dedicated to the history of World War I was established in the cloth hall building.

For whom?

If you appreciate classical architecture and enjoy admiring impressive historic buildings then you must visit Ypres. People interested in the history of these areas will find many interesting places here that will bring closer both better and slightly more difficult facts from the history of the city. Historians fascinated by the fate of the Western Front of World War I should visit a specially prepared museum and numerous memorial sites.

Hotel New Regina

If someone is looking for accommodation in Ypres, it is best to stay in the very center, because this is the only place where something interesting happens. Regina is located right next to the biggest monuments, so you can easily explore everything on foot. The hotel offers a reasonable standard and our room was really fine. In the morning, a very tasty breakfast awaited us, and the staff was very nice and helpful.

Ariane Hotel

A modern, high-class hotel. It is true that you have to walk a bit to get to the center and the main monuments, but it is located on a nice and quiet side. The hotel is surrounded by a beautifully kept garden, and the terrace, which floats over the water, was the perfect place for us to relax after a day full of sightseeing. The room is spacious and very comfortable. High-quality service and meals.

Main Street Hotel

Probably the best hotel we stayed at during our trip to Western Europe. An incredibly atmospheric place, located in a renovated, historic tenement house. The room was decorated very stylishly, but also thoughtfully, and we felt very comfortable here. Convenient parking, and the main attractions were just a 5-minute walk away. But the greatest advantage of the place are the people who run it. You can see that they do it with passion and that they really care about the character and good atmosphere of the hotel.

Hotel Ambrosia

A great, small hotel located right next to the old town and the city's biggest attractions. Upon entering, the staff welcomed us very nicely and were happy to help us plan our sightseeing and advise where to eat well. The room had everything you needed to sleep comfortably. There are no super luxuries here, but the price was reasonable considering the location.
