Saqqara
Autor, Travelbay
Saqqara and Dahshur are two exceptionally interesting attractions, although rarely visited by tourists, located on the southern outskirts of Cairo. The first is where farmlands along the Nile valley turn into desert sands. Within Saqqara you will find a large complex of tombs , including the famous stepped Pyramid of Djoser.

Dahshur is a bit further south. Archaeological work in this small village has revealed the remains of the seven pyramids as well as a vast complex of tombs erected for the Queens and nobility of Memphis. Researchers say that the buildings from Dahshur were a kind of "dress rehearsal" for the construction of much more impressive pyramids in Giza. Both archaeological sites are under the protection of UNESCO.
